| Talented singers
breathed life into the evergreen compositions of B.A. Chidambaranath at
a function in Kozhikode to mark his first death anniversary. |
Mellifluous tribute: Madhu Balakrishnan and Vinita
sing a song under the baton of Rajamony.
When playback singer Madhu Balakrishnan rendered ‘Manda mandam nidra
vannen…,’ (sung by K.J. Yesudas in the film ‘Chekuthante Kotta’), the
audience at Tagore Centenary Hall in Kozhikode was mesmerised.
The occasion was a homage to B.A. Chidambaranath, the man who
composed that song and several other evergreen melodies. The show, to
mark his first death anniversary (August 31), was another reminder of
the remarkable talent of a music director who is regarded as one of the
pioneers in Malayalam film music.
His son Rajamani, a composer who is better known for his background
scores in nearly 700 films in 10 languages, was the conductor of the
programme.
“I am happy that I could conduct the show here in Kozhikode because
this city was dear to my father. He worked in All India Radio Station,
Kozhikode, for 10 years. It was difficult to select the songs for this
show because he had composed so many fine melodies,” said Rajamani.
Golden songs
‘Karayunno puzha…’ (‘Murappennu’), ‘Nidra than neerazhi…’
(‘Pakalkinavu’), ‘Attuvanchi kadavil…’ (‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’),) and
‘Swargavathil…’ (‘Kanatha Veshangal’) were some of the film songs that
were sung. Besides film songs, Chidambaranath’s popular devotional
‘Gangayaru pirakkunnu…’ and ‘Isai njnanam…’ a Tamil composition, was
also sung.
Trivandrum Krishnakumar, his wife, Binny Krishnakumar, Devanand,
Satheesh Babu, Vinitha, Vijitha, Vineeth (the winner of this year’s
Gandharva Sangeetham contest on Kairali TV) and Suresh Dutt were the
singers who breathed life into the golden songs of Chidambaranath.
Krishnakumar recalled that Chidambaranath had played the violin for
a Carnatic music concert he had given. “That was his last concert. Six
months after that concert, he passed away,” said Krishnakumar.
